On Malfunction

On Malfunction” was inspired by Martin Dixon’s essay “The Horror of Disconnection: The Auratic in Technological Malfunction” (2007). In it, Dixon highlights the complex and often contradictory relationship we have with technology, proclaiming that malfunction is a place of both critique and creativity.  The film posits this way of thinking through the use of synthesization, degradation, recycling and distortion of visual and audial materials. Existing in the situations that Glitch Art, Shoegaze and Video Art provide, On Malfunction both abides by certain rules of art and breaks others.
